Bradley Method Natural Childbirth Classes focus on relaxation

Learn the techniques to minimize pain in labor...

Relaxation during labor is the key to the Bradley Method.  It is the safest and most effective way to reduce unnecessary pain and to handle the pain that you do experience.  While other methods seek to control the sensations of labor (emphasizing distraction as their primary labor control technique), The Bradley Method encourages mothers to trust their bodies, understand the physiology of labor and to rely on their coach to help them relax physically, mentally and emotionally during contractions.

Our natural childbirth classes are twelve weeks long and, in addition the class topic, have a relaxation "technique of the week" focusing on either...
  • physical relaxation (is her body calm and loose?)
    • Techniques include:
    • +tense/relax contrast exercise
    • +progressive relaxation
    • +massage
    • +stroking
  • +mental relaxation (what is comforting for her to think about?  what calms her?)
    • Techniques include:
    • +progressive relaxation again
    • +muscle observation
    • +warmth relaxation
  • +emotional relaxation (does she feel safe?)
    • Techniques include:
    • +positive expectations
    • +rainbow visualization
    • +sensory recall
Beginning in class 5 we have a labor rehearsal where couples practice some of the relaxation strategies we've addressed in class.  This 10-15 minutes of focused relaxation practice is unique to the Bradley Method of Natural Childbirth and is a crucial element of the series.  With this role play, couples get a feel for what each person will be doing during labor.  The coach will be able to practice active labor support and relaxing phrases.  The laboring mom will be able to imagine the kind of coaching assistance she'll find most comforting.  While these labor rehearsals continue through class 11, students are encouraged to practice together daily at home to cultivate a strong partnership.
